Festivals and fairs

Market fairs

Lestedo market fair: first and third Sunday of the month.
Rodiño (Sergude) market fair: second Sunday of the month.

Filloa festival

Lestedo. Piñata Sunday (the Sunday after Carnival).
The filloa festival began at Carnival in 1984 and has since become one of the most important food festivals in the area, drawing thousands of people every year to the festival ground in Lestedo, where it is held.
The star of the show, the filloa, is the Carnival dessert par excellence: a thin crêpe made from milk, flour and eggs, prepared in many different ways. In Lestedo you can taste them plain or filled with honey, chorizo and more. The filloa makers say the secret is keeping the stone on which they are cooked at a constant temperature, so that they come out as thin as cigarette paper.

Carnival (Entroido)

The parish of Sergude, for more than 50 years, and more recently Lestedo, which revived the tradition some years ago, star in the traditional Carnival of the Ulla area: the Xenerais do Ulla, the “generals and couriers”, with their verbal duels. The troupes set out parish by parish, led by a small number of couriers on fine horses, riding ahead to announce the procession. They are the vanguard of a small parish army that follows under the command of the generals. Both stand out for their dress uniforms and tricorn hats full of coloured feathers, as they tour every village cheering the neighbours and singing songs that end with the “Encontro” or “Atranque”: a satirical, mocking duel in rhyme between couriers and generals that the villagers follow closely. In the end good sense prevails and, after the sharp exchange, peace is restored.

The parish of Codeso holds an original Carnival with beautiful floats built and decorated by the people of each village, turned into real travelling theatres where satirical scenes about recent news are performed.
