Parish

Loureda

All parishes

A parish of 8.20 km2 made up of the settlements of Agra, Caneda, A Eirexe, Lamparte, Loureda, Midón, A Moa, O Outeiro and A Pena. It lies in the north of the municipality, crowned by Monte Castelo (497 m). It has 210 inhabitants. It once belonged to the jurisdiction of Bendaña, then part of Santiago de Compostela. A striking feature is the number of square hórreos (granaries, typical of Asturias): around 25 survive, the oldest being those of Midón and Outeiro, with stone legs and a wooden body.

Parish church of San Pedro de Loureda

Built with a rectangular nave in the 16th century and remodelled in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, when the Carmen chapel was added. Its Baroque altarpieces are particularly noteworthy.

Parish wayside cross

Standing on the festival ground, it has a square platform and cubic pedestal, a square chamfered shaft and a square capital with volutes, acanthus leaves and cherubs. The square cross shows Christ crucified on the front and the Virgin at prayer on the back.

Hill forts of A Igrexa and Monte Castelo

Iron Age fortified settlements of which only the outline survives.

Monte Castelo viewpoint

From this 497 m summit there is a sweeping view of the surrounding land, taking in the beauty of the municipality and the city of the Apostle.

Caneda bridge

A small bridge originally built with stone slabs and later rebuilt in dressed stone. It linked the parishes of Vigo and Loureda and gave access to the local mills.
